Notes by the composer: "The occasion for setting this poem of Stephane Mallarme (1842-1898) to music was the exhortation of Vassilis Papavassiliou and Angelica Cathariou to write a piece for the admittedly original combination of two apparently unconventional rnusical "instruments", meaning the human voice (mezzo soprano in this case) and the double bass.
According to the comments of the Greek translator of the poem, Alexis Ziras, it was introduced in 1867 with the temporary title "La tete" (The head). The last form with the definite heading "Pauvre enfant pale" (Poor pale child) was published in Mallarme's collection "Pages" in 1891.
Regarding music, the eight stanzas of the poem are characterized by a common thematic material that is modified or comes back identical from one stanza to the other. The double bass writing is contrapuntal to the voice, sometimes converging to, other times diverging from the corresponding "functional" melodic movement of the voice, acquiring in this way a solo character, in some cases stronger, in other weaker".

Σημείωμα του συνθέτη: "Αφορμή για τη μελοποίηση αυτού του ποιήματος του Στεφάν Μαλλαρμέ (1842-1898) ήταν η προτροπή του Βασίλη Παπαβασιλείου και της Αγγελικής Καθαρίου να γραφτεί ένα έργο για τον ομολογουμένως πρωτότυπο συνδυασμό δύο φαινομενικά αντισυμβατικών "οργάνων", δηλαδή της ανθρώπινης φωνής (στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση της μέτζο σοπράνο) και του κοντραμπάσου.
Σύμφωνα με τα σχόλια του Έλληνα μεταφραστή του ποιήματος, Αλέξη Ζήρα, παρουσιάστηκε το 1867 με τον προσωρινό τίτλο "La tete" (Το κεφάλι). Η τελευταία μορφή με τον οριστικό τίτλο "Pauvre enfant pale" (Φτωχό χλωμό παιδί) δημοσιεύτηκε στη συλλογή "Pages" του Mallarme το 1891.
Όσον αφορά τη μουσική, οι οκτώ στροφές του ποιήματος χαρακτηρίζονται από ένα κοινό θεματικό υλικό που τροποποιείται ή επανέρχεται πανομοιότυπο από τη μια στροφή στην άλλη.
Η γραφή του κοντραμπάσου είναι αντιστικτική προς τη φωνή, άλλοτε συγκλίνει και άλλοτε αποκλίνει από την αντίστοιχη "λειτουργική" μελωδική κίνηση της φωνής, αποκτώντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο έναν σολιστικό χαρακτήρα, σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις ισχυρότερο, σε άλλες ασθενέστερο".
