Maurice Aerts (Saint-Quentin , February 20, 1929 – Mechelen , March 20, 2012) was a Belgian double bassist . He was part of the National Orchestra of Belgium , the orchestra of the BRT and was brought by Gerard Mortier to the Orchestra of the Muntschouwburg to become leader of the basses.
He was a teacher at the Brussels Conservatory and taught many well-known bassists there, including Etienne Siebens , Lode Leire , Korneel le Compte, Frank Coppieters , Koenraad Hofman and Wies de Boeve . He also regularly composed double bass quartets, including the Contrabass Quartet of the Munt and the Maurice Aerts Quartet.
Fred Brouwers once called him the "father of double bass players".
